How to Apply

To apply for this program, the candidate should send their application via emailApplicants from SDSU should email Dr. Connie Weaver (cmweaver@sdsu.edu), applicants from Scripps Research should email Dr. Luke Wiseman (wiseman@scripps.edu), and applicants from UCSD should email Dr. Joachim Ix (joix@health.ucsd.edu).  The title line of the email should be “U2C Application – [Applicant’s last name]”The email should contain the following application materials:  

  1. 1 page personal statement describing your background and interest in the program. Please specifically highlight the relevance of your research to KUH initiatives. 
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV). 
  3. For scholars already in a participating lab, we also request a mentor statement from the primary mentor(s) of the applicant describing the applicant strengths, relevance of their research to KUH initiatives, and commitment to mentorship of trainee. 
  4. For scholars who have not yet joined a participating lab, we request two recommendation letters from supervisors or mentors describing the potential and background of the candidate. 
  5. For predoctoral scholar candidates, a formal transcript from the undergraduate degree granting institution. 

Applications will be screened by the executive committee comprising faculty from across the three participating institutions and select applicants will be invited for an in-person interview with program leadership, selection committee members, and program leadership. Formal letters of acceptance will then be provided to selected trainees and their home departments. 

Selection Criteria 

  • Scholars will be selected to the program based on the following criteria: 
  • Academic achievement 
  • Research plan 
  • Relevance of research project to KUH initiatives. 
  • Written and oral communication 
  • Motivation for pursuing an academic career 
  • Mentor/referees assessment
